Mentoring Program

The CCRA "Each One Reach One" Mentoring Program is designed to match up court reporting students with court reporter mentors. The purpose is to encourage, support, guide and nurture the next generation of court reporters through school and during the beginning stages of their new careers. There is no better person for this job than a working reporter who has been through it.

Students

To get a mentor, please complete the student application and list your choice of mentors from the Mentor List. Your application will be processed by CCRA and you should be matched up within two weeks.  Student Application

Mentors

To become a mentor, you must be a current CCRA member and a California CSR. Please complete the mentor application and submit it for listing your name on the Mentor List.

By volunteering as a mentor with the Each One Reach One program, you are eligible to earn Professional Development Credits (PDCs) through NCRA.  You may earn a maximum of 1.0 PDCs towards the total requirement of 3.0 CEUs per cycle.  A minimum of five hours will be required for earning .25 PDCs, and those hours can either be divided up among multiple students or can all be spent with the same student. As a mentor, you may submit the same student up to two times per cycle (for a total of 10 hours and 0.5 credits), if you have an extended relationship.  Mentoring relationships must be completed during the member’s three-year cycle.  NCRA charges a $40 evaluation fee at the time of the application for PDCs.  Mentor Application

Both Students and Mentors are requested to take a moment to review the Student Guidelines and Mentor Guidelines. These guidelines list some very important considerations for mentoring and being mentored.

The goal of this program is to help Support Our Students by keeping students encouraged in school and ultimately seeing them pass the CSR and become working reporters.  If you have questions about the mentoring program contact Priscilla Gwaltney.

Student Guidelines

  • I respect my mentor's time, and I promise to keep my e-mails short and to the point.
  • I will try to keep requests for expedited responses to a minimum.
  • I realize the relationship between my mentor and myself is professional and that our communications should remain private.
  • When venting frustration or concern, I will not use profanity, make derogatory remarks, or specify names of people or entities in my communications.
  • I will notify my mentor when I am unavailable to receive/send e-mails.
  • I understand and acknowledge that any views, opinions, guidance or remarks of my mentor are specific to him/her and may not reflect the views, opinions, guidance or remarks of the California Court Reporters Association or any other professional associations.
  • I promise to abide by the guidelines, or any other guidelines in the future, adopted by the California Court Reporters Association "Each One Reach One" Mentoring Program. If I fail to adhere to these guidelines, I understand and agree that my name may be removed from the mentoring list.

I understand that the assignment of mentors is voluntary. If my mentor elects to discontinue his/her participation in the Mentoring Program, and I desire to be assigned another mentor, I may choose another mentor through the CCRA "Each One Reach One" Mentoring Program or request reassignment via e-mail to Lauren Tilbury.

Mentor Guidelines

  • I respect my student's time, and I will answer e-mails promptly. ("Promptly" is a term to be defined by the mentor and student.)
  • I will try to guide my student by words and example.
  • I realize the relationship between myself and my student is professional and that our communications should remain private.
  • I acknowledge that any views, opinions, guidance or remarks I may make are personal and may not reflect the views, opinions, guidance or remarks of the California Court Reporters Association or any other professional association.
  • I will notify my student when I am unavailable to receive/send e-mails.
  • I promise to abide by the guidelines, or any other guidelines in the future, adopted by the California Court Reporters Association Each One Reach One Mentoring Program. If I fail to adhere to these guidelines, I understand and agree that my name may be removed from the mentoring list.

I understand that my assignment as a mentor is voluntary. If I elect to discontinue my participation in the CCRA Mentoring Program, I agree to promptly e-mail my student of this decision. As a courtesy to my student and the CCRA "Each One Reach One" Mentoring Program, I will promptly notify Lauren Tilbury of my decision via e-mail so that another mentor may be assigned to my student.
