About the Speakers:
Jane E. Piles, CSR, RPR, CRR, CBC
Jane started her career in 1991 after graduating with an Associate of Arts degree in Court Reporting from Washburn University in Topeka, KS. She started working for a freelance firm that covered courtrooms, administrative hearings, and deposition settings. Having a keen interest in CART and captioning services that started while attending school, and with the concurrent passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, Jane tailored her writing to be conflict-free and as near perfect as possible from day one. She encouraged the firm owners from that first job out of school to add CART and captioning services. After receiving their approval, she helped develop a marketing plan to pursue this type of work for the firm. Within a short period of time, they had multiple contracts and hired additional writers who were doing primarily CART and captioning work. In 1999, Jane decided to open her own company and began taking on broadcast contracts with a vast client load that kept her very busy. Since that time, she has worked providing captions to Fortune 500 companies, Ivy League universities, medical schools, G-8 Summits, top-secret medical and pharmaceutical research projects, a Presidential inauguration, State of the Union addresses, sporting events, and everything in between. Jane has worked in-person events worldwide. Jane credits much of her success to surrounding herself with writers who are reliable, driven, have tremendous knowledge of the CAT software they use, and an uncanny ability to troubleshoot the ever-changing technology that we are faced with on a daily basis. Her company has grown leaps and bounds in recent years, and she is always looking to partner with writers who are skilled, willing to learn new things, and most importantly to love the work that they do. Jane's home office is in Topeka, Kansas, where she lives with her husband and her lovable 100-lb Golden Retriever, Dexter. She and her husband have three grown children and three granddaughters who are the true lights of their life.
Stacey Phelps, RPR, CRC
With a career that began in 1994, following graduation from the American Institute of Business, in Des Moines, Iowa, Stacey began her professional journey working as an official court reporter. In 2000, she transitioned to broadcast captioning where she captioned anything and everything, which encompassed high-profile events, including several Olympics, Presidential addresses, awards shows, as well as 9/11 coverage as it happened live; live sporting events and shows; NBC Today Show and other live news; and ESPN SportsCenter, to name a few. Stacey’s work evolved from broadcast into CART work, both remote and on-site. She has provided CART for large tech conferences, such as Salesforce and Microsoft; covers heavily technical medical conferences, such as the Littlest Tumor Foundation, which covers cutting-edge research for neurofibromatosis; captions every year for the United Nations; and does educational captioning for classes ranging from undergraduate to doctoral programs. Sports continues to be a heavy emphasis in her career, as she does live press conferences for professional sports, which takes Stacey around the world. She has covered events such as the French Open, the Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open, and post-season for Major League Baseball. Stacey’s favorite part of her career is the flexibility it affords, the opportunity to solve challenges in technology, and the opportunity to continue learning at any stage of our careers. When she is not working, Stacey lives in the Des Moines area with her husband, Tyler, and their three dogs. She has three grown children and one granddaughter, whom they love to spoil.
