The California Court Reporters Association, in conjunction with the Northern California Court Reporters Association and the Sacramento Official Court Reporters Association, are excited to announce the California launch of NCRA’s nationwide “A to Z Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand” program. The goal of this intensive recruitment effort is to introduce members of our local communities to the court reporting and captioning professions through a hands-on course in which candidates are provided loaner steno machines and attend live weekly classes over a six-week period taught by experienced reporters. President's Message

Happy New Year to CCRA!  This month marks the beginning of our 2018-2019 year, and we are so excited for what’s to come.  I am so honored to be your new president!  Thank you to all who made it out to Rancho Mirage for our 108th Annual Convention this last weekend.  What a fantastic time we had!  Thank you to our speakers, vendors, sponsors, and volunteers.  To all attendees, please fill out our convention survey so we can make sure next year is even better.  Your feedback, good and bad, is crucial.

To introduce myself, my name is Rachel Barkume.  I live about an hour north of Sacramento in a tiny mountain town called Alta with my husband and three dogs (Yes, they are my children.)  I’ve been a reporter since 2011 and on the board of CCRA since 2013.  I was a freelance reporter in my first year and a half of reporting, then an official in Madera County for a little over four years, and now I’ve been freelancing again for about a year.  I’m also a CART captioner and a proofreader.  I love that I’ve been able to experience many facets of this profession so far, and I love that we have the flexibility to do that!

In my experience in leadership so far, I’ve been, appropriately so, labeled as the “new reporter perspective.”  I gladly took on this role to bridge the gap between the veterans who are so extremely knowledgeable about how it’s always been done and the newbies who need direction in the new technological climate of reporting.  We have so much to learn from the history of our profession, and it’s time for us to take that information and move it forward into how we project our future.  A wise friend once told me, “Historical knowledge should inform the present but not hamper the future.”  We must always move forward and be proactive and not reactive.  Things change at an alarming rate and we must be ahead of the game.  We will do this together.

I am honored this year to walk in the footsteps of the most amazing leaders in court reporting history in our great state of California.  We will continue our long-standing tradition of fighting for you, for our profession, and for our community of court reporting brothers and sisters.  I look forward to a year of progress, growth, and connection.

Dynamex Explained

The California Supreme Court’s recent decision in Dynamex created a new legal test for determining whether someone is an “independent contractor” and not an employee.  In order to be properly classified as an independent contractor, the hiring entity must prove each of the three factors in the “ABC Test”: (A) The worker is free from the control and direction of the hiring entity in connection with the performance of the work, both under the contract for the performance of the work and in fact; and (B) The worker performs work that is outside the usual course of the hiring entity’s business; and (C) The worker is customarily engaged in an independently established trade, occupation, or business of the same nature as that involved in the work performed.  In the context of court reporters, the analysis will depend upon the particular facts and circumstances of each individual relationship.  While it is ultimately unclear how Dynamex will be applied to court reporters, this article provides a detailed legal overview to assist our members with understanding the key issues.  READ MORE
