Breaking News: Victory! CCRA Goes to the Capitol

On Tuesday, April 9th, CCRA was in full force appearing at the Assembly Committee on Judiciary to represent our membership regarding Assembly bills being heard that would affect court reporters statewide.  We are excited to share the outcome of the hearings.

AB 251 (Wagner) - DIED in committee: six no votes, three yes votes, and one abstained.  A victory for court reporters statewide!  This bill would have allowed for electronic recording in family law courts.  The bill can be reconsidered before May 4, which we consider to be unlikely.  This is the beginning of a two-year legislative session and the bill could possibly be resurrected again next year.

AB 365 (Mullin) - PASSED.  This bill requires transcription by a CSR in order to qualify as prima facie evidence of that testimony and proceeding.

AB 566 (Wieckowski) - PASSED.  This bill requires courts to comply with specific requirements before contracting out services, currently, customarily or previously performed by trial court employees.

AB 655 (Quirk-Silva) - PASSED.   This bill authorizes individual trial courts to establish a Reporter's Salary Fund from which the salaries and benefits of official reporters shall be paid.

Because of CCRA, court reporters statewide will benefit from all the hard work and dedication by this association regarding pending legislation.

Thank you to all who participated in today's hearings.  We all appreciate your dedication and giving of your time for the protection of this great profession.
