Voice Writing Demystified: What They REALLY Do & How They Create the Record with Patrick Stephens and Tori Pittman

There’s a lot of mythology, misunderstanding, and sometimes outright misinformation circulating about voice writers and how they produce the official record. It’s time to clear the air with facts, not folklore. Join us for a dynamic and eye-opening session as two leaders in the profession—NVRA Immediate Past President Patrick Stephens and legendary and award-winning veteran reporter Tori Pittman—break down what voice writers actually do, how they create the record, and the technology and training behind the voice-writing method. This course is designed especially for steno machine writers who want a factual, inside perspective—and is open to all credentialed and aspiring reporters, steno or voice. Whether you’re curious, skeptical, or simply want a deeper professional understanding, this class will give you clarity, context, and confidence when discussing voice writing within our field. Bring your questions. They'll have the answers. Join the conversation. Strengthen your knowledge. Elevate the profession—together.

About the Speakers:

Patrick StephensPatrick Stephens CVR, RVR-M, CSR, CCR
Patrick Stephens is a dual-licensed and certified voice writer who began his career at the Brown College of Court Reporting in Atlanta, Georgia, under the tutelage of Colette Wayda. After working in metro Atlanta for years, Patrick moved to Austin, Texas, to continue his career as a federal freelance court reporter, which is where he honed his skills as a realtime voice writer. Patrick's main area of focus has been serving the federal courts as a contractor and handling complex federal depositions where each day is a surprise and twist in terms of expedited service requests, vernacular, dialects and subject matters. Patrick holds the NVRA's Realtime Verbatim Reporter - Master certification -- one of seven voice writers in the country with this distinction -- as well as licensure in the states of California and Georgia.

Tori PittmanVictoria L Pittman BA, CVR-CM-M, RCP, RVR FAPR, RDR, CRI (Ret.)
Tori Pittman is an accomplished court reporting professional who has performed in many subspecialities in the field (except captioning!). She began reporting in 1999 as a machine writer and officially transitioned to solely voice writing in 2011-2012, when her bilateral tendinitis caused her to be unable to use the steno machine any longer. Tori is a retired FAPR, RDR, CRI and current CVR-CM-M, RCP, and RVR (with plans for the RVR-M!). She loves all things court reporting and is honored to be a mentor, trainer, and presenter when offered the opportunity.
