2:00pm - 5:30pm          Speed Contest with Rachel Barkume, CCRA President

Come compete for the title as California’s Court Reporter Speed Champion!  CCRA’s Annual Speed Contest will consist of two five-minutes tests.  The first test will be a two-voice dictation at 270 wpm, and the second test will be a legal opinion dictation at 220 wpm.  Both dictations will be five minutes in duration and each candidate will have 90 minutes to transcribe each test.  The top three contestants who rank the highest average above 95% on both tests combined will be awarded first, second, and third place, respectively, with the first place winner being declared the 2019 California Reporter Speed Champion!

2:00pm - 3:30pm          Not Your Everyday Comma Rule (this session will continue at 4:00pm) with Margie Wakeman Wells

You know to put commas around the state after the city and to surround "Your Honor" with commas. What about participles? What do you do with them? What about compound sentences? Does that element need a pair of commas or just one? This session will take a look at some of those comma rules that are not often talked about. The session will be given via PowerPoint and in a question-and-answer format.

So you've wondered what ASL is all about, and would like to learn more?  Well, Mark Crossley (who is a CART Captioner and a Legal Court Interpreter of ASL) will be providing an introductory course in ASL with plenty of additional resources to follow up with handouts and video source, as available downloads from our website as well.  You'll learn a novel way to learn ASL's fingerspelling, how to say your name and ask a CART client's name, and to inform the Deaf person that you are the captioner for a specific class or event.  

5:30pm - 7:00pm          Battle of the Bay: CSR vs. AI with Lesia Mervin, Additional Speakers to be Announced

Is Artificial Intelligence taking over our jobs?  Come and listen to a lively discussion from the personal experiences of these heavy hitters.  You will walk away with a new understanding of where AI is being utilized and the pitfalls AI presents.

Do you want to add more initials behind your name?  The presenter will not only go over our past CRG and CCG tests, she will cover our grading procedure, format guidelines, and she will provide useful tips and tricks for passing both the CRG and CCG.  You will be ready to pass that test after this helpful seminar!

With the CSR just around the corner, students can do a practice run-through of a Mock CSR. Instructors will explain the process of taking the CSR, tell you what you can expect, and share with you their valued test-taking tips. So bring your charged machines and check your nerves at the door.

Come to this session for tips on what to concentrate on and what to study for the CSR English exam. The three exam sections will be explained and suggestions given for how to prepare. Is your vocabulary good? How can you make it better? Are you up on the grammar rules? What about the proofreading section? Let’s talk about how to focus on the issues in that section. The session will be conducted in a question-and-answer format.

This class is all about officials!  Aimee will give an update on the issues facing California’s official court reporters, including but not limited to legislation, labor contracts, remote reporting, CCRA’s transcript rate increase bill, and how you can become involved with CCRA’s Action Team.

The Certified Realtime Generalist (CRG) exam is a five-minute professionally recorded dictation test given at 200 Q&A with a maximum of 40 errors, 96% accuracy, with a two-minute lead-in.  Pass it once, remain a CCRA member in good standing, and the CRG and CCG are certificates you can proudly claim forever. (USB thumb drives will be provided to submit tests.)

The CCG WKT consists of 50 questions, multiple choice and true and false. The questions are mainly based on CART captioning in the classroom and the courtroom.  Test takers have 90 minutes to complete the exam. (Must Attend WKT CCG Part 1)
