Action Team
In
early 2003, CCRA established a network of court reporters around the state
called the CCRA ACTION TEAM. Their
role is to be the eyes and ears of the association at the local level.
Each Team Leader is charged with identifying reporters in their area to call on
to assist in activities.
CCRA
continues to provide training for the Team Leaders and members.
The Action Team Leaders played a key role in defeating the Judicial
Council’s budget proposed to take away the ownership of the transcript
and to replace court reporters with digital recording devices.
The
team is now monitoring activities to document any use of electronic
devices in court rooms.

Battles Has Been Won... But the War is Not Over
The primary goal of the
CCRA ACTION Team is to preserve
the integrity of the justice system through verbatim reporting and
the preservation and guardianship of the record.
Specifically,
CCRA’s goal is to work to ensure that the human and technological
resources are available in California to create the legal record.
We
know that within California, there is a growing shortage of court
reporters due to a significant decrease in school enrollment and an
increase in other career opportunities available.
CCRA has established
this ACTION TEAM to empower the court reporting community to be an active
partner in the change process needed to ensure the absolute integrity of a
verbatim record.
Preparation
for the Future
CCRA is closely
monitoring the activity of the Judicial Council since the release of the
Report of the Task Force on the
Reporting of the Record. We believe that decisions made by this task force and the
recommendations that are part of the final report will define the future
of court reporting for both official and freelance reporters.
When the legislative
package of the task force recommendations is introduced, the members of
CCRA must be prepared to support the recommendations that are in the best
interests of the consumer in the justice system and we must also be
prepared to work to eliminate any legislative proposals that jeopardize
the integrity of the verbatim record.
ACTION
Team Organization
This effort will require:
-
A
statewide grass roots network of informed reporters who will be ready
to education, motivate and stimulate our supporters to action
-
The
financial resources to support the needed activities
-
Substantiated
data supported by reports and studies that document without questions,
the long-term implications of the changes being proposed.
Your
Role
We need your involvement.
We are establishing a statewide ACTION Team. In the larger counties, there will be a Depo Action team and
an Official Action Team. In
less populated areas, several counties may be combined into one local
team.
Jan White, CCRA
Past President, and
Carlos
Martinez, CCRA Board Member,
are heading up the
team.
Key Leaders are being identified in each area.
The role of the key leaders will include:
-
Coordination
and assistance in identifying local ACTION Team members
-
Communication
at the local level including passing on information to local members
via phone, in person, and at meetings
-
Working
with CCRA to coordinate local presentations, activities, and identify
local resources
-
Assisting
in fundraising activities at the local level
-
Encouraging
membership in CCRA and volunteering on the Action Team
-
Serving
as a “Grassroots”
contact at the local level
If you would like to
serve as a Key Leader, contact
Jan White,
Carlos
Martinez or the
CCRA office.
We strongly recommend
that each CCRA member stay informed and aware of the impact of the student
shortage and the discussions of the Recording the Record Task Force.
