SPEED CONTEST
Show off your skills at this year’s annual convention and compete for the title of California’s Court Reporter Speed Champion!  CCRA’s Annual Speed Contest is back and will consist of two five-minutes tests.  The first test will be a two-voice dictation at 270 wpm, and the second test will be a legal opinion dictation at 220 wpm.  Both dictations will be five minutes in duration and each candidate will have 90 minutes to transcribe each test.  The top three contestants who rank the highest average above 95% on both tests combined will be awarded first, second, and third place, respectively, with the first place winner being declared the California Court Reporter Speed Champion! Requirements:   USB thumb drives will be provided to submit tests.  BRING YOUR CHARGED MACHINES.

Court versus freelance.  Have you found yourself working in court lately?  As a freelancer, you will find there are many obstacles and hoops to jump through to work in a civil courtroom.  Join us for an in-depth discussion on the ins and outs of government work.  There will be a guideline for general court work as well as one for civil appeals specifically provided.

As a Court Reporter, your body reacts to the positions and postures you use while on the record. Sitting properly oftentimes requires strengthening your core and releasing tension. This ergonomic class will teach you techniques for sitting properly and exercises to help you strengthen your core to build endurance for your long on-the-record time. Comfortable clothing required!

The Certified CART Generalist (CCG) exam will be 15- minute professionally recorded dictation test.  The first 5 minutes will be lead-in, with the last 10 minutes graded.  The examination will be given at 180 words per minute.  96% accuracy is required to pass the test (76 errors total allowed).

The Certified Realtime Generalist (CRG) exam is a five-minute professionally recorded dictation test given at 200 Q&A with a maximum of 40 errors, 96% accuracy, with a two-minute lead-in.  (USB thumb drives will be provided to submit tests.)

Be a smart test-taker. Increase your chances of doing well on the Professional Practices or English portions of the CSR or the WKT of the RPR. When you know a few of the “short cuts” to taking tests, you can focus on the content and really show what you know. Come learn about the field of government reporting and working for the State of California and our government.  This is a great opportunity to learn about all that goes into these positions and what opportunities are available in this arena.  Come with questions ready and pick the brains of these reporters.  They will be answering questions and highlighting their careers within the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Public Utilities Commission, the Department of Industrial Relations, and the US House of Representatives.

Learn to recognize word pieces and parts to help you zero in on the meanings of words that you are unfamiliar with. If you know “accelerate,” can “celerity” be far away? Spend some time increasing your knowledge of words – including some pesky pairs and whether “sometime” is one word or two.

WKT CCG PART 2 with Debra Bollman,

The CCG WKT consists of 50 questions, multiple choice and true and false. The questions are mainly based on CART captioning in the classroom and the courtroom.  Test takers have 90 minutes to complete the exam. (Must Attend WKT CCG Part 1)

HOW TO NEGOTIATE A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU) with Michelle Castro, Legislative Director, SEIU, Kimberly Rosenberger, Legislative Advocate,SEIU, & Joseph Jelincic, Chief Negotiator, California State University Employees Union, SEIU
This jam-packed class will cover both CART captioners working with MOUs and official court reporters.  As the CART captioning field grows, come learn how to negotiate a contract and what you might want to get included in your future MOU.  Also, officials will be provided information from other courts, including real-time differentials, technology differentials, etc. Get current information so you’re ready for your next negotiations!

Windows 10: Tips and tricks to help you embrace the new operating system. Microsoft has given us a new interface and it is not familiar to users. This session will give you some of the new features and ways to get to the old features that you depended on from your computer.  We’ll take questions and do our best to answer each one, or you may “stump the speaker” and win an exciting prize.

FROM RESCUED TO RESCUER - The Search Dog Foundation - Jan Lopez, Founder, Julie Brandau Community Service Memorial
In remembrance of Atlanta Court Reporter Julie Brandau, America’s court reporting industry has joined forces with Search Dog Foundation (SDF), a 501(c)(3) organization, whose noble mission is to rescue high- energy dogs from shelters and breed rescues and train them in live-find search. These canine-handler teams deploy both nationally and internationally.
It costs $10,000 to train each K-9, and to date, donations to the Brandau Memorial have exceeded $100,000, a service project embodying Julie’s passions – a love of dogs and her philanthropic nature. To date, the industry has sponsored the training of 10 rescued dogs who are now partnered with our country’s finest, firefighters, and other first responders, at no cost to their departments. Learn what it takes to recruit, train, and deploy; experience these amazing K-9s demonstrating their extraordinary skills.
